About CouncilTaxToday
An independent council tax calculator for England. We publish the official 2026/27 charge for every one of England's 296 billing authorities, turn it into the bill for each band, and show the working — so you can check the number on your bill before it arrives.
Where the figures come from
Every charge on this site starts from the official statistics release “Council Tax levels set by local authorities in England 2026 to 2027” published by MHCLG (the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government). For each billing authority we use its Table 10 figure: the average Band D council tax for the authority's area, including the authority's own charge and the county or GLA, police, fire and combined-authority precepts.
Postcode lookup uses the free postcodes.io service to match a postcode to its billing authority. We do not estimate or adjust any figure: if a number here ever disagrees with the MHCLG release, the release is right and this page is wrong.
How every bill is calculated
Council tax in England has eight bands, A to H. Each council sets one number — its Band D charge — and every other band is a fixed fraction of it set in law: A is 6/9 of Band D, B is 7/9, C is 8/9, D is 9/9, E is 11/9, F is 13/9, G is 15/9 and H is 18/9 (double Band D). A bill on this site is simply:
- Band D charge × your band's statutory fraction
- Minus 25% if the single-person discount toggle is on
- Divided by 12 for the monthly figure, or by 10 for the standard instalment figure councils collect April–January
Nothing else is added, rounded away or modelled. The calculator runs entirely in your browser using the same published data as the tables on each council page.
The one honest caveat
MHCLG publishes an area average Band D for each authority. Parish and town council precepts — and a small number of special levies — vary within a council's area, and those variations are averaged across the whole area in the official figures. So if your parish charges more or less than its council's average, your exact bill can differ from the figure here by a few pounds a year. Your own council tax bill is always the final word.
Freshness and corrections
The figures on this site were checked against the MHCLG release for the 2026/27 tax year (release published March 2026; site data last reviewed October 2026), and they are refreshed when the official statistics are revised or a new tax year's release appears. If you spot a figure that looks wrong, compare it with the MHCLG release linked above — and check the area-average caveat first, as it explains most small differences.
CouncilTaxToday is an independent information site. It is not a council, is not affiliated with GOV.UK or MHCLG, and cannot take payments or change your bill — only your council can do that.
