Bands explained
What the bands A–H actually mean
Council tax bands are based on what your home was worth on 1 April 1991 — not today's price. Each band pays a fixed share of the Band D charge. Here are all eight bands, priced at the England average Band D of £2,391.52:
| Band | Share of Band D | 1991 property value | Bill at England average |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | 6/9 | Up to £40,000 | £1,594.35 |
| B | 7/9 | £40,001 – £52,000 | £1,860.07 |
| C | 8/9 | £52,001 – £68,000 | £2,125.80 |
| D | 9/9 (the baseline) | £68,001 – £88,000 | £2,391.52 |
| E | 11/9 | £88,001 – £120,000 | £2,922.97 |
| F | 13/9 | £120,001 – £160,000 | £3,454.42 |
| G | 15/9 | £160,001 – £320,000 | £3,985.87 |
| H | 18/9 | Over £320,000 | £4,783.04 |

Discounts & reductions worth checking
Council tax assumes two adults live in a home. If that isn't true for you, your bill may be too high — these are the main reductions, and they're claimed from your council, not automatic.
Single-person discount — 25% off
If you're the only adult in the home, you're entitled to 25% off the whole bill. The calculator above applies it with one toggle. It isn't applied automatically — you have to tell your council.
Students pay nothing
Full-time students are “disregarded” for council tax. A home where everyone is a full-time student is exempt entirely; if one non-student adult remains, they qualify for the 25% single-person discount.
Disability reduction
If your home has a room or adaptation that's essential for a disabled resident — an extra bathroom, or space for a wheelchair — your bill is worked out as if the property were one band lower. Band A homes get an equivalent reduction.
Council Tax Reduction
On a low income or claiming benefits? Every council runs a Council Tax Reduction (support) scheme that can cut your bill substantially — pension-age applicants are protected under national rules. Apply through your council.
Methodology & sources
Where these numbers come from
Every figure on this site starts from the official statistics release “Council Tax levels set by local authorities in England 2026 to 2027” published by MHCLG (the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government). We use its Table 10 figure for each billing authority: the average Band D council tax for the authority's area, including the billing authority's own charge and the county/GLA, police, fire and combined-authority precepts.
Bills for other bands are the Band D figure multiplied by the statutory ratios (A 6/9, B 7/9, C 8/9, D 9/9, E 11/9, F 13/9, G 15/9, H 18/9). Postcode lookup uses the free postcodes.io service to match a postcode to its billing authority.
Honest caveats
- Figures are area averages: parish and town council precepts and special levies are averaged across the whole council area in the official data, so a specific parish's bill can differ by a few pounds.
- The England average Band D for 2026/27 is £2,391.52 — the official taxbase-weighted figure from the same release.
- This site covers England only and is independent — not affiliated with any council or GOV.UK.
- Last updated for the 2026/27 tax year, October 2026.
Questions
Council tax, answered
Every home in England sits in one of eight bands, A to H, based on what the property was worth on 1 April 1991. Your council sets a charge for Band D, and every other band is a fixed fraction of it — Band A is 6/9 of Band D, Band H is double. Your bill is your council's Band D charge multiplied by your band's fraction.
